How does dental bonding work so fast?

The “magic” of dental bonding is Dr. Ferrari‘s ability to prepare, shape, and secure dental materials directly to your teeth. Once secured, this specially prepared material covers up cosmetic imperfections on your teeth. It takes between 30 and 60 minutes to treat each chipped, stubbornly stained, slightly cracked, and otherwise “flawed” tooth. Treatment with bonding does not require return visits to our office.

What material do you use?

Dental bonding typically involves the use of a quartz-like material called composite resin. This material is safe for all patients and highly “tissue compatible.” It can also be shade-matched well, so the color of the resin looks like the color of your neighboring, natural teeth. Composite resin may be prepared to blend in seamlessly with your smile.

Do you have to remove enamel to make room for the resin?

No. Bonding keeps your tooth totally intact. In fact, we only need to slightly “texturize” the front surface of each tooth to be treated. By etching the surface of the tooth with a special gel, it helps the tooth to better “bond” with the resin material. This characteristic of dental bonding makes it a highly conservative and non-invasive procedure that retains the underlying tooth structure.

Can bonding be done if my teeth and gums are damaged?

Generally, cosmetic or elective procedures, such as dental bonding, are only suitable for patients with healthy teeth and gums. Dental bonding is designed to disguise cosmetic concerns, such as an overly short (or long) tooth or teeth with excess spaces between them. Sometimes, cosmetic concerns can actually be signs of oral health problems that require restorative dentistry care. For instance, dark pits or spots on the teeth may actually be signs of a cavity. In that case, we can use composite resin in a dental filling. The resin is applied to the empty space (cavity) to fill it and rebuild the tooth’s structure.

Can bonding be used to stop further damage to a tooth?

In some cases, patients whose gums have receded or pulled away from the teeth may be at risk of dental decay. This is due to the gums exposing the roots of the teeth. By applying and securing resin to the areas of root exposure, we protect the teeth and can prevent further damage.

How long does dental bonding last?

The answer to this question depends on factors like how well you brush, floss, and take care of your teeth. While your bonding may require occasional “touch-ups” to look its best, it’s highly unlikely that it will break away due to the secure bond between the tooth and the resin. Ferrari Dental can work with you to keep your treated teeth in top shape!
