Veneers: Covering up imperfections, so you can proudly show off your smile!

A veneer is a covering. In dentistry, we can create coverings that actually disguise cosmetic imperfections in your teeth. Ferrari Dental brings a high level of craftsmanship and artistry to the process of planning and designing your veneers. These new front surfaces of your teeth look natural and are both strong and durable.

How are veneers made?

Veneers are typically made from porcelain. We take an impression or mold of your teeth and collect information about your mouth, which is then sent to our dental lab. An expert technician then uses this information to shape and fabricate each veneer to exacting specifications.

Why are veneers typically made from porcelain?

Porcelain is a material of choice for many reasons. One, it can be perfectly shade matched. The color of each veneer looks like the color of the surrounding, natural tooth structure and neighboring teeth. Two, porcelain looks like natural tooth enamel. Porcelain shares many of the same properties as enamel, including its ability to reflect light. It gets a very natural result when in the right, skilled hands. Three, porcelain tends to “wear well.” It doesn’t stain as much as other materials. Four, porcelain is strong and durable and can last for 20 years or longer with good care.

How are veneers placed?

To ensure the veneer fits properly, Dr. Ferrari typically buffs off a small amount of enamel from the front of the “imperfect” teeth. By buffing the teeth ever so slightly, the veneers will not protrude too much when placed on top of each tooth. Typically, temporary veneers are placed to protect the teeth from sensitivity and damage associated with the removal of enamel. Once your permanent veneers are done, you return to our office so we can remove the temporaries. The permanent ones are applied, and a special bonding agent and curing light are used to harden and secure them to your teeth.

Can veneers be used on all imperfections?

Many cosmetic concerns can be addressed in a minimally invasive way with veneers. Dr. Ferrari has used veneers to cover up stubborn stains and other discoloration; chips and other “wear and tear”; and gaps and other spacing issues between the teeth. Veneers can also be used to resize and reshape teeth, resulting in a more uniform appearance. Our treatment recommendations are based on a thorough evaluation of your mouth and any concerns you may have.

Do veneers require special care?

While veneers are incredibly strong and durable, they are not indestructible. They can be damaged by behaviors like teeth grinding, chewing ice, biting fingernails, and using your teeth as tools to open packages. No veneer treatment at Ferrari Dental would be complete without providing you with thorough instructions for aftercare. Your brand new smile can last for decades – if not the rest of your life – as long as you are kind to your teeth and dental work.
