Supplemental fluoride applications are highly effective in protecting teeth from decay and strengthening tooth enamel. Fluoride is a naturally occurring substance that is found in certain foods and in water. The treatment is particularly beneficial for individuals who are at a high risk of experiencing tooth decay.
Fluoride offers two primary benefits for teeth:
- Fluoride improves the strength and durability of teeth by attaching itself to tooth enamel.
- Fluoride reverses the effects of tooth decay by remineralizing tooth enamel.
Patients can receive fluoride treatment in just one visit to our office. Fluoride is applied directly to the teeth in the form of a gel, foam or varnish using special trays that are worn over the teeth. After the process is finished, the patient must refrain from eating or drinking for at least one hour so that the teeth can fully absorb the fluoride.
Patients receive supplemental fluoride treatments for many reasons, including:
- Sensitive or exposed root surfaces
- Deep grooves or fissures on the teeth
- Inadequate oral hygiene
- Limited fluoride exposure
- High sugar intake
- Prior experience of tooth decay
- Poor saliva flow
While supplemental fluoride applications can be extremely beneficial, they should not serve as a replacement for proper oral hygiene habits. Patients who receive fluoride applications should continue to brush and at least twice per day, floss daily, and receive regularly scheduled dental checkups in order to maintain strong, healthy teeth.
