Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are two unique treatment methods that are designed to restore the function and appearance of teeth that have been damaged. They are slightly more intricate than a dental filling, but they are not as extensive as a full dental crown. The end result is a strong, durable tooth that still retains its original structure and integrity. At Ferrari Dental, we are proud to provide patients with inlays and onlays that look entirely natural and function flawlessly.
Because inlays and onlays are created using impressions of the patient’s teeth, a patient must make two visits to our practice in order to receive this type of treatment. When the patient makes their first visit, impressions of their teeth will be taken so that their custom inlay or onlay can be constructed. Once the restoration is ready, the patient will return for their second visit to have it installed.
Inlays consist of filling material that is bonded to the interior of a tooth. This type of restoration is most commonly used when a tooth is damaged in such a way that it cannot be properly fixed with a standard filling, but a full dental crown would be considered excessive. Unlike an onlay, an inlay will not cover any of the cusps, or points, of a tooth. Instead, it will only cover the area inside these points. Since inlays utilize a custom fit, a tooth that has been repaired with an inlay is usually stronger than a tooth that has been treated with a standard filling.
An onlay differs from an inlay in that an onlay covers at least one of the tooth’s cusps, or points. Most onlays are bonded to teeth at these points. In some cases, an onlay might cover the entire chewing surface of a tooth. Onlays are an excellent treatment option for restoring the chewing surface of a damaged tooth, and they allow a tooth to retain more of its original structure than if it were replaced with a dental crown.
